A Taste of Greenland

Arrive into Ilulissat. Meet & greet by a local guide and transfer to the hotel for check-in. After a welcome information meeting, head out for a guided city walk. This small town is known for the Ilulissat Icefjord and for huge icebergs that float around the Disko Bay, shed by the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier. Trails run to the Sermermiut settlement for dramatic views over the ice. The Ilulissat Museum traces the area’s history and the life of local-born explorer Knud Rasmussen. The area is home to thousands of Greenland dogs, used for dogsledding.

Ilulissat is the third largest town municipality in Greenland with more than 5000 inhabitants. About 4500 people lives in the town Ilulissat and 500 people live in the four remaining small settlements: Ilimanaq, Oqaatsut, Qeqertaq and Saqqaq.

Three hundred kilometres north of the Polar Circle, Ilulissat lies beautifully situated close to one of the world's largest glaciers – Kangia. The glacier produces about 20 million tons of ice each day, all floating into the Ilulissat Icefiord and the Disko Bay. All this ice is a good basis for fishing for Halibut which is the main occupation in Ilulissat. Due to the unique ice and landscape, the area of Kangia and the Icefiord has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 2004.

You have several days, at the start and end of the trip, in Ilulissat with time to join some of the many optional excursions, allowing you the freedom to choose what you want to see and do. Try a kayak tour in the breathtaking scenery which surrounds Ilulissat. After getting suited up, walk for 5 minutes down to the Zion church, where the kayaking trip starts. An experienced guide will give safety instructions, all the required equipment and adapt the tour to the group´s needs, no previous kayak experience is needed.  The route depends on the weather and ice conditions, but the aim is to paddle out near the bay in front of Sermermiut Valley, from where there is an amazing view over Iceberg bank.

The next day in Ilulissat invites you to explore the Arctic waters. Head out on a scenic whale‑watching cruise, gliding among the majestic icebergs in search of the giants of the sea. Summer offers excellent chances of spotting humpback whales as they feed in the deep fjords.

Although whale sightings can’t be guaranteed, the experience of cruising through the Icefjord - surrounded by sculpted icebergs and the stillness of the Arctic—is unforgettable. After the tour, return to Ilulissat to enjoy the rest of your day at leisure.
